My favorite place to hang out at, in this established shop you will find hundreads of different industrial sewing machines! And they are pros, they know what they are talking about. Great service, very friendly and concerned staff. Parking next to shop available. They sell overlocks, straight stitch, zig-zag, leather etc specialised machines.
Also: Sewing machines Museum upstairs, open saturday afternoons! They aparently have Queen Victoria's sewing machine that she offered to her daughter. I m going there soon to see it.
Sewing Craft Superstore:

TOOTING BEC

London SW17 7AA

Tel: 0208 767 0036

This shop is 2 doors down from the Industrial Sewing machine shop, and is wonderful for choice of everything you need to sew. They sell all the home sewing machines that you cannot find in the industrial part, which includes embroadery machines, overlocks and machines which do everything (but are not as strong as industrials which, most of them, only do 1 thing) the best is to buy one from each shop ;-)
They have an extensive craft deparment, patterns, furs, birthday things, feathers etc. Very nice staff too.

A pleasant , reasonnable, and full of stock fabric store in the middle of seamstress Paradise-Wallet hell Berwick St. They stock some good fabric, some very expensive but some affordable. It is not as good as Southall, but they have a lot more choice, like those traditionnal English fabrics that the Indian community don't really sell.

SOUTHALL
59, The Broadway
London UB1 1JY

Tel: 0208 571 9920

Also known as "NO BARGAIN", this fabric shop on the Broadway has got some delightful fabrics, but states clearly that bargaining is not allowed. We found though that the staff always try to sell us everything we do not need! (therefore trying to bargain with us.)
They have an extensive wild silk fabric range, so if you want to please me just get me some!(any colour will do)At only £7 a metre. (in normal aberdashery shops , wild silk is about £12 a metre) They also have a lot of lovely velvets.
On the whole they are a bit more expensive than the £1.50 a metre market stand I usually socialise at. But I love it anyway.

A great fabric shop, where the sales assistants are very friendly and helpful, and have their feet on the ground. They do not insist if you can't find what you want, but will do their best to match what you are searching. They sell a lot of sari suits fabrics, but also velvets, cottons, sheet fabric, tutu fabric, and a lot more. My favorite shop after the stall one. Lovely.

UPTON PARK

This shop is one of the rare ones, when I was living in Forest Gate (and didn't go to Southall) , which offered me velvet fabrics in summer, at moderate prices.(not being in season) The lady of the shop was very friendly and did her best to help me find what I wanted, which I found! She was lovely, and I got loads of fabric there, promissing her to come back. Unfortunatly I hadn't really started sewing then, and the reserve lasted me for longer than I thought..then I moved to Hackney and forgot about her. The shop is very small, but she has an amazing choice for the space. Please go and say hello if you are about!

SOUTH HARROW

This local aberdasher is extremely friendly and good value. The choice is big, and you will find there every little bit to do your garments with. They are about to move though, but are staying in South Harrow. I recommend it.
They also sell fabric. (raw silk...a bit more expensive)
