Jessica being the drummer knows she can't just have any dresses that get in the way and just extravagantly fray everywhere.
She showed me a top she loved but could not wear for some reason. She wanted a fabric which was very soft and see through.
Her dress had gathered fabric along the breasts, and gathered again after the hips, becoming quite wide. She hesitated for the colour, liked cream colour but also wanted black.
We eventually got her some lovely cream chiffon (THE cream chiffon) but also some black chiffon, which was silk.
I started by making her the cream outfit, and it took me ageeeeeeessss...Can you imagine just gathering dozens of fidley little bands of fabric, after having hemmed their long sides both times? Nightmare! I eventually got there, and sewed it on a double layer of cream fabric (being concerned about her well being and not wanting her to be too embarassed if it was see through) and it looked like a cuddly toy! very fluffy and gorgeous...It opened with a zip at the back. Same on the hips.
The day of the trial, she was grateful but said she would have liked black in fact, as all the other girls outfits were cream...And I could tell she wasn't that keen, I think it was a bit too fluffy, meaning I did all that work which was not necessary! She showed me her dress again, and all I saw on it was one or 2 bands of fabric, very lazily gathered(just about gathered at all!) and it only had maybe 3 per layer! (I had put 5 or 6 per layer) I did not promise anything at all, but said "if I had time" I may make her the black one. Which i did, and it took much less long. She liked that one very much, and worn it for the Apollo gig. Well, I think she did, I could not actually see that well from the back, and I did not see her after the gig (nor Alice) .
The costume was a challenge!
