Alice, being the main singer of the
band, may have thought quite a lot about image. Well, she knew what she liked,
and the first time we met she provided me with 4 drawings of dresses she would
have liked to have ! Eventually we settled on a different design altogether
for their important gig at the Apollo. She draws very well, and has a lot of
original ideas of designs. She wanted to portray the image of classy, as well
as ripped and poor. She wanted to look like a peasant.
The dress she wanted was going to have bits of fabric on the top which would
be able to be crossed around her body, and same on her sleeves. She wanted it
fitting, to about knee lengh. No hemmings if the fabric permitted it.
First I made her a petitcoat, she didn't ask for one but I made her one to make
sure the other dress would not be see through, and to have the little bit of
chiffon coming out from the main dress.
The petitcoat was made with rigid light brown linen, closed with buttons at
the back, and the bottom has softer cotton, same colour, and I added the layer
of the very sought after soft cream chiffon she got from my special fabric store.
Decorated with bits of lace, and a brown rubbon at the bottom. She wanted the
chiffon to fray, but I had to overlock it as the fraying was getting everywhere
and it would not have been easy to wear.
Her main dress: she chose and got the fabric for it. She likes cotton(as it
looks like what the people would have worn a century ago) and I made her dress
according to a corset pattern that I changed and made longer, as she liked the
style of the corset I was doing at the time. The dress has small roses embellishing
where the bits of fabric on the front depart from. It undoes at the back, with
a zip, and the sleeves end after the elbow, with a little lace to finish.
She was thrilled to see the result, and loved the petitcoat so much she actually
worn it on its own!
Here are the best pictures of the main dress, taken from their gig at Aldershot.
Here is a photo from the Hammersmith gig, it looked great on stage, very ghost like! plus one taken the day of the dresses trial before the gig. The rest are details of the outfit in studio light.
